Trolltunga
A spectacular multi-day hike in Norway leads to one of the country’s most iconic viewpoints — Trolltunga, or the Troll’s Tongue. This famous rock formation juts out horizontally from a cliff, hanging 700 meters above the deep waters of Lake Ringedalsvatnet. Reaching the edge, you’ll find sweeping views of fjords, snow-capped mountains, and a wild, open landscape. The Trolltunga hike is challenging but rewarding. The full 3-day loop covers roughly 45 kilometers, with over 2000 meters of elevation gain, depending on your route. Starting from P1 in Tyssedal, the trail climbs through forested terrain and rocky slopes until you reach the Trolltunga viewpoint. Many hikers bring a tent and camp here overnight to catch the sunrise and enjoy the spot with fewer people. After Trolltunga, the trail continues around Lake Ringedalsvatnet and leads toward the quieter zone near Mosdalsbu Hut, a remote shelter next to a peaceful mountain lake. This middle section feels wilder and more remote, with wide plateaus and little foot traffic. The final stretch descends back toward Tyssedal, finishing the loop through forest and rocky paths. While it’s possible to hike Trolltunga in one long day, turning it into a 3-day trek with wild camping gives you more time to enjoy the solitude, changing scenery, and natural beauty that make this one of Norway’s best hiking experiences.

Route Map
Day by Day
Day 1: Tyssedal Trolltunga Carpark P1 to Trolltunga
Start your multi-day Trolltunga hike from Tyssedal’s P1 carpark. The trail begins with a steep climb and continues through rocky terrain and highland plateaus. Expect exposed sections, stone steps, and wide views as you gain elevation. After reaching the famous Trolltunga rock ledge — suspended 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet — find a suitable spot to set up your tent nearby. Camping at the viewpoint allows you to enjoy a quiet evening and a stunning sunrise before the day hikers arrive.
Day 2: Trolltunga to Mosdalsbu Hut next to Mosdalsvatnet Lake
Begin your second day by hiking past the Trolltunga plateau and along the southern side of Lake Ringedalsvatnet. The trail becomes quieter and more remote, with fewer hikers and wide open alpine views. You’ll pass streams, ridges, and scattered boulders before reaching the peaceful Mosdalsbu area. This unmanned hut sits beside Mosdalsvatnet, a calm mountain lake perfect for a peaceful overnight camp. Expect solitude, great sunset views, and a true wild camping experience in Norway’s highlands.
Day 3: Mosdalsbu Hut to Tyssedal Trolltunga Carpark P1
On the final day, descend from the Mosdalsbu valley back toward Tyssedal and the P1 parking area. This part of the trail is mostly downhill, following rocky and forested terrain with occasional gentle climbs. It offers a relaxed end to the Trolltunga loop hike, with time to reflect on the dramatic views and quiet spots you passed over the last three days.
