Retezat Mountains
A scenic and demanding 4-day hike deep in the Retezat Mountains — one of the best multi-day hiking trails in Romania. The route passes through Retezat National Park, a remote and wild area in the Southern Carpathians known for its rugged peaks, alpine lakes, and untouched nature. The trail winds through dense forests and high meadows, then climbs steeply toward Bucura Lake, the largest glacial lake in Romania. From there, you’ll continue along rocky ridgelines to reach Peleaga Peak (2509 m) — the highest point in the Retezat Mountains — with sweeping views over the surrounding peaks and valleys. You’ll also pass other alpine lakes like Zănoaga and Lia, with chances to spot marmots, eagles, or mountain goats along the way. This is a tough but rewarding trek, with long climbs and exposed, rocky paths. Most of the trail stays above 2000 meters, so proper gear for high-altitude hiking is essential. There are no huts or shelters along the route — this is a true wild camping hike, where you’ll need to carry a tent, food, and warm clothing. Nights near the lakes can get cold, even in summer. For experienced hikers who enjoy wild camping and remote alpine scenery, the Retezat Mountains offer one of Romania’s most beautiful and peaceful trekking experiences.

Route Map
Day by Day
Day 1: Cârnic to Bucura Lake via Cabana Gențiana
Start your hike in Cârnic and follow a scenic forest trail into Retezat National Park, passing Cabana Gențiana. The path climbs steadily through alpine meadows and rocky terrain until you reach Bucura Lake, the largest glacial lake in Romania. Set up your tent by the lake shore for a night of wild camping at high altitude.
Day 2: Bucura Lake Loop via Păpușa, Peleaga, and Poiana Pelegii
Begin a high-altitude ridge loop from Bucura Lake. First, ascend to Păpușa Peak, then continue to Peleaga Peak — the tallest summit in the Retezat Mountains at 2509 meters. Descend toward Refugiul Salvamont Poiana Pelegii before looping back to Bucura Lake for a second night of lakeside camping. Expect rocky paths, stunning views, and remote alpine terrain.
Day 3: Bucura Lake Western Ridge Loop via Zănoaga Refuge
Explore a quieter part of Retezat National Park with a loop west of Bucura Lake. Hike across rugged ridgelines and descend toward Refugiul Salvamont Zănoaga. This route is less traveled and offers dramatic views, solitude, and wild mountain landscapes. Return to Bucura Lake for a third night of wild camping under the stars.
Day 4: Return to Cârnic via Cabana Gențiana
After your final night at Bucura Lake, pack up camp and retrace your steps. Hike down through rocky slopes to Cabana Gențiana, then continue through the forest to reach Cârnic. This marks the end of a rewarding 4-day trek through one of Romania’s most scenic and untouched mountain areas.
