Jirisan

Jirisan

This classic 2-day trek through Jirisan National Park (지리산국립공원) takes you to the summit of Cheonwangbong Peak (천왕봉, 1,918 m) — the highest mountain on South Korea’s mainland and a popular spot for sunrise hikes. The route offers a combination of forested paths, exposed ridgelines, and panoramic views across the southern Korean Peninsula. The hike begins in Daesong-ri, following a well-marked trail that steadily climbs through forests and past mountain streams. On day one, you’ll pass Sesuk Shelter (세석대피소) and continue toward Jangteomok Shelter (장터목대피소), where you’ll spend the night. The final approach to the shelter includes beautiful open views and a clear look at the surrounding ridgelines, especially in autumn and winter. Overnight accommodation in Jangteomok Shelter is basic and communal. Hikers sleep on heated floors (온돌) in large, gender-separated sleeping halls, with no private rooms. There are no showers, and only portable-style toilets are available. You’ll need to pack out your own trash, and meals must be cooked in the shared cooking area using your own gear. Despite the rustic setup, the shelter is warm, safe, and perfectly placed for summit access. Day two starts early with a pre-dawn hike to Cheonwangbong Peak, the highlight of the route. Watching the sunrise from Korea’s mainland rooftop is a memorable experience, often above a sea of clouds. After summiting, descend back to Jangteomok to rest briefly before continuing the long, steady descent toward Jungsan-ri, where the trail ends. This Daesong-ri to Jungsan-ri route is one of the most popular and scenic in Jirisan National Park. It combines nature, physical challenge, and cultural significance, making it one of the best multi-day hikes in South Korea for well-prepared and moderately experienced hikers.

How to Get There

For this 2-day Jirisan hike, we used Guryegu (구례구역) as our starting base, arriving the day before from Seoul via KOrail train and local transfer. Guryegu is a convenient gateway to the southern side of Jirisan National Park. On the morning of the hike, we took a short taxi ride from Guryegu to the trailhead in Daesong-ri, where the hike begins. After completing the hike at Jungsan-ri, we boarded a local bus to Jinju (진주), a well-connected city with onward options. From Jinju, we continued by intercity bus to Busan, where you can catch the KTX high-speed train back to Seoul. This point-to-point route is easily managed by public transport and requires no backtracking, making it one of the most accessible multi-day hikes in South Korea.
